The Department of Political Science combined with Economics was very gracefully introduced at the time of opening of the Gurucharan College in the year 1935. Initially, disciplines of Economics and Political Science were taught under one department which was identified as the Department of Economics & Civics. Political Science became a full-fledged department after the bifurcations of both the departments on 01-06-1963. Initially the department received immense help from many stalwarts in educational field of the then period like Prof. Dilip Kumar Chakraborty, Prof. B.K. Dey, Prof. Jatindra Ranjan De. After the bifurcation, the Department started with two teachers- Prof. Jatindra Ranjan De as HOD and Prof Hitesh Goswami. From the very inception, the department has been offering both Pass and Honours courses of the graduation course along with Higher Secondary course to the learners. Keeping in view the burden of classes, two more posts were subsequently sanctioned. The department has been enriched with the presence of luminaries like Prof Girban Biswas, Prof. S B Dutta, Prof Niranjan Dutta and Prof Narayan Chandra Mazumdar. Today the Department is one of the largest departments of the institution with more than 1500 students and four permanent faculty members. With the upgradation of the College into University, the Department is starting both PG and PhD program from 2026 academic session.
